The idea
A local classroom. Real Italian classmates. And a program guided by someone who actually did it — lived alone in Sicily, enrolled himself at the Liceo, and made it through the full year.
I’m Christopher Linea Jr. I’m eighteen now. When I was seventeen, my dad bought me a plane ticket to Sicily, handed me cash, and told me to figure it out. I found an apartment. I enrolled myself at the local Liceo Artistico in Santo Stefano di Camastra. I connected with a Sicilian guidance counselor there who spoke English — she took me under her wing and helped me navigate the year.
I made it through. Full year of school. Ceramics, sculpture, real Italian classmates, real critiques. I picked up the language, learned the town, made mistakes, figured them out, and came out the other side knowing Sicily in a way you can only know it by living in it alone at seventeen. It was one of the most important years of my life.
I began this solo journey on my own when I was seventeen, and I am now eighteen. For one whole school year I lived in Sicily and earned the experience by doing this myself. I realized how much I actually learned — and what a rite of passage it was for me. I’m building this project to open the same door for other young people, and to share what I’ve learned so they can be enriched by worldly experiences the same way I was. I know the school, I know the counselors, I know the town, and I will be here to guide and chaperone them through the process.
My father, Christopher Linea Sr., is the founder of Homestead Ventures — the site you’re on. He heads up the agrotourism side of the business and operates our family olive grove in the Nebrodi hillside. This program is my part of the family: the academic year, chaperoned and guided by someone who was recently in the same shoes the students will be in.

The tracks
Students choose one primary focus but experience all four as part of the program. The Liceo is the anchor; the rest builds around it.
Track 01 · Anchor
Enrolled at the Liceo Artistico in Santo Stefano di Camastra — a real Italian art school specializing in Sicily’s centuries-old ceramic and sculptural traditions. Full studio access, working alongside Italian classmates and instructors. Portfolio-quality work by the end of any term.
Track 02 · Field Trips
The Liceo organizes history-led trips throughout the year — Greek temples at Agrigento, the Norman cathedral at Monreale, the layered streets of Palermo, and the volcanic shadow of Naples and Pompeii. Students travel alongside Italian classmates on real school trips with real local context.
Track 03 · Home Life
Weekly cooking sessions with Sicilian families — not classes, but kitchens. Pasta by hand, family-recipe sauces, seasonal produce, and the small rituals of the Sicilian table. Students learn how food actually works in a culture that treats it as identity.
Track 04 · Language
Formal Italian language instruction plus daily immersion in Sicilian dialect, town rhythms, and youth culture. Students leave conversational in Italian and comfortable navigating an Italian town without translation help.

Pick the depth that fits. All three enroll students at the Liceo and structure the wider immersion around it — the longer the stay, the deeper the integration.
Program 01 · Semester Sampler
One trimester at the Liceo
A structured trimester in Santo Stefano di Camastra. Perfect for a gap-year sampler, a full-immersion summer alternative, or a shorter dive before committing to a longer stay.
Best for: students testing the waters, or families wanting a shorter cultural interlude between school years.

Two trimesters at the Liceo
Two trimesters at the Liceo — the sweet spot. Long enough to become genuinely conversational, build portfolio-quality studio work, and integrate into the town beyond “visitor.” Most students pick this one.
Best for: gap-year students, students taking a break between high school and university, or Sicily-curious families with older teens.

Three trimesters at the Liceo
A full academic year. Students leave fluent in Italian, deeply integrated into Sicilian life, with a substantial portfolio and a network of Sicilian friends and mentors they’ll keep for life.
Best for: students committed to a full cultural transformation, or families deferring university for an extraordinary year abroad.

We recommend budgeting an extra $200–$400/month for personal spending.
How it works
A clear, human process. We work directly with your family and your home school to make it seamless — and we’re on the ground in Sicily to make sure the landing is soft.
Submit the online application, a short essay, and references. We review personally and respond within two weeks.
A video call with the student and their parent or guardian. We want to know who’s coming and make sure the fit is right on both sides.
We coordinate directly with the Liceo, your home school’s admissions office, and place the student with a vetted Sicilian homestay family.
Airport pickup in Palermo or Catania, orientation week in Santo Stefano di Camastra, and a soft landing into the school and town.
Applying
Simple, four pieces. Nothing exotic. We work with you if anything is missing.
Current school transcript, a photo, and a short questionnaire about interests, hobbies, and reasons for wanting to study in Sicily. Applicants are typically ages 15–19.
A signed consent form and a short conversation with us by video. For students under 18, we coordinate all guardianship paperwork with the Liceo and Italian authorities.
A one-page essay from the student on why Sicily, what they hope to bring back, and how they see themselves handling the challenge of a new language and culture.
Two references — one teacher, one adult who knows the student well outside school. Simple email introductions are fine; we’ll follow up ourselves.
