Homestead Ventures · Project Concept · Sicily

Sicily's donkeys built this island. Now they need us.

The Ragusano donkey — native to the province of Ragusa, once the backbone of Sicilian countryside life — is one of Europe's rarest breeds. Mechanization nearly wiped it out. We're bringing it home, on our land, with a plan that conserves the breed and builds a real business around its milk.

The Raise

This is an active capital raise. The land is already ours.

Homestead Ventures is actively raising capital to launch the Ragusano Donkey Project as a real, profitable business — not a preview and not a donation drive. Founding partners come in now, at seed terms, before the herd, mill, and product line exist.

Where we start

On our own land.

The initial build-out happens on Chris's Sicilian property — already secured, already ours. No capital goes to land acquisition on day one. Your capital funds the herd, the facility, the mill.

Where we grow

Neighboring properties.

As the business proves out and milk, product, and export revenue start flowing, we lease or acquire neighboring parcels — expanding the herd and the pool. This is where the compounding happens.

Who we need

Founding partners.

A limited founding cohort per venture. Founders come in first, at seed terms, and are named on the operation. Standard partners come in as the round fills. Equity, not donation.

The frame

This isn't charity. It's a bet on a breed, a product, and a place.

Donkey milk is one of the most nutritionally unique foods in the world — and Ragusano milk is the closest of any donkey milk to human milk. Rare, traceable, Sicilian-origin. Already used in premium skincare and clinically validated as a hypoallergenic substitute for babies with cow's milk allergy.

What's missing is scale — and a conservation story to anchor it. That's the opening. A registered sanctuary herd on our land, a milk supply nobody else is running at this level, and three products that stack on top of each other.

Sicily's donkeys almost disappeared once. This time, they come back profitable.

The breed

One of eight autochthonous Italian donkey breeds.

Officially recognized by Italy's Ministry of Agriculture in 1953, the Ragusano comes from Modica, Scicli, Santa Croce Camerina, and Ragusa — the deep south of Sicily. Dark bay coat, pale muzzle and belly, black mane and tail, large expressive eyes.

Bigger and more energetic than other Sicilian donkeys. Hardy enough that it was once exported to northern Europe for farm work, and its mules served in the Alps. It carries a Slow Food Presidium and is managed under the Italian national herd book by ANAREAI.

Why it's endangered

The numbers came back. The genetic base didn't.

In 2007, the FAO listed the Ragusano as endangered — only 349 animals remained. Today it's reclassified as vulnerable: roughly 5,000 head across 723 herds, with about 3,500 registered breeding jennies.

The numbers recovered, but the genetic base is still thin, and the breed depends on a handful of dedicated breeders. Without new herds, inbreeding and loss are real risks. Every registered breeding pair matters.

The milk — the science

Closer to human milk than any other donkey milk on earth.

This is the heart of the project. Ragusano milk is low casein, high whey, high lactose, rich in lysozyme and lactoferrin. A jenny averages 1.64 kg of milk a day over a 300-day lactation — roughly 490 kg a year per jenny. Not commodity dairy. A rare, bioactive, high-margin product with two very different end markets.

01 · Clinical

Children with cow's milk protein allergy.

This is the best-documented use. Clinical studies report tolerability of 82.6% to 98.5% of affected children. A double-blind trial of 30 children with both IgE and non-IgE allergy found 96% tolerability, with eczema improving in the atopic dermatitis subgroup.

96% Tolerability in double-blind trial

The mechanism is solid: donkey milk has roughly 1.3–1.8 g of protein per 100 g — close to human milk, far below cow's 3.1–3.8 — with a casein-to-whey ratio near human milk's, and its proteins share more amino-acid sequence with human homologues than cow's do. Cross-reactivity of IgE is weak and nonspecific.

02 · Skincare

Skin: anti-inflammatory, barrier repair, anti-aging.

Donkey milk downregulates NF-κB in skin fibroblasts — anti-inflammatory, pointing toward eczema, psoriasis, and wound-healing applications. A 2020 dermatology study found nanoliposome creams with skimmed donkey milk improved skin hydration and barrier function.

−32.9% Wrinkle count · 28-day trial · 2017

The same anti-aging trial (donkey milk emulsion on 32 volunteers, 28 days) showed wrinkle length down 9.6%, hydration up 11.4%, firmness up 9.6%, elasticity up 16.1%. Vitamin C content is nearly four times that of cow's milk.

How we frame it: the strongest proof is CMPA, where donkey milk is a clinically validated alternative. The skin and immune benefits are supported by composition and early research — and that's exactly where the skincare line lives. Honest science, honest claims.

The business plan

Three phases. Each one funds the next.

Not a moonshot. A staged build where every phase stands alone and stacks into the next.

01

The Herd

Establish a sanctuary herd.

A registered sanctuary herd on our Sicilian property. Veterinary care, proper pasture, breeding stock from the national herd book. First milk harvest by end of year one.

Target: 20 jennies.
02

The Skincare Line

Launch creams, soaps, serums.

A premium skincare line built on the milk's anti-inflammatory and barrier-repair properties. Donkey-milk cosmetics are already a premium category. We capture it with a breed nobody else is scaling.

Direct-to-consumer & specialty retail.
03

The Powder

Freeze-dry for global export.

Install a freeze-dry unit. Powder the milk — it keeps roughly 10% of liquid weight, shelf-stable, shippable worldwide. Sell on Amazon and specialty channels. Freeze-drying preserves the bioactive proteins that heat destroys.

Global market: ~$29M · growing ~11%/yr.

The math

Why twenty donkeys is enough.

You'd need 160 donkeys to match a single cow's daily milk output. That's the point. Donkey milk is not commodity dairy. It's a rare, traceable, premium product where volume is a feature, not a bug.

Twenty jennies produce about 9,840 kg of milk a year — roughly 3.3 tonnes of freeze-dried powder. That's a real, sellable volume in a premium, low-volume, high-margin niche. Rare, traceable, Sicilian-origin product — and the conservation story is the moat.

The opportunity

Equity, not donation.

Early supporters get in before the product line exists. This is a share of future revenue — a percentage of milk sales, skincare margins, and powder exports — proportional to what you put in. Not a donation. An investment in something that compounds: more donkeys, more milk, more product, more return.

Tier 01

Herd Builder

Fund a breeding pair and a year's care.

You're at the origin. Your capital brings the first jennies onto the land, keeps them fed and cared for through their first full lactation, and establishes the breeding record.

What you get: Your name on the herd registry. A share of milk sales tied to your registered pair. First right to invest in Phases 02 and 03.

Tier 03

Scale Investor

Fund the freeze-dry unit & export line.

Herd and product are proven. Your capital installs the freeze-dry unit that turns the milk into a shelf-stable global product — the segment holding over half of a $29M market growing at ~11% a year.

What you get: A share of international powder sales. Preferred position on any expansion round. Named partnership in the export entity.

Not a founding partner?

You can still help bring it to life.

Not everyone we talk to is positioned for a founding-partner slot — and that’s fine. If you want to see the sanctuary come to life and hold the first product when it ships, there’s a way in at every level. Backers named. Product delivered. No equity, just early access to something real.
